CIS Data Backup Policies

EMC Retrospect (All CIS-supported Desktop and laptop computers (both Windows and Mac):

• A full backup is made of each Desktop computer every four weeks.
• Desktops backup incrementally every night starting at 8pm.
• Laptops backup routinely during the day whenever they are connected to the network. Priority is based on elapsed time since the last backup.
• It is the responsibility of the user to make sure that their computer is connected to the campus wired network and is being actively backed up.

Directories backed up:

• Macs: Everything in the /Users folder, except the Music folders/files.
• Windows: Everything in the users Documents & Settings folder, except music files.
• No OS or system files are backed up on Desktop or Laptop computers.

Retention Policy:

• Desktop and Laptop backup tape sets are retained for 16 weeks, (approximately 4 months).
• Starting on a Friday, after a 16 week cycle, the backup set is recycled back into the tape pool and overwritten with a new full backup and subsequent daily incrimental backup.

CommVault (SDSC) backup service (Sun, Linux, and Mac Servers, and CIS-managed Linux and Sun desktops):

• Full backups are preformed bimonthly on the first Friday of every other month.
• Incremental backups are preformed nightly starting at 11:30pm for the remainder of the two month cycle.

Directories backed up:

• All file systems (excluding the OS and /tmp).
• All user data.

Retention policy:

Each of the two bimonthly full backup sets are retained a total of four (4) months: the current bimonthly backup set is initalized with a full backup and then incrimentally updated daily for two months, after which it is archived in the SDSC facility for two additional month. After the two month archive period has expired, this set is again made the active backup set for the next two months and the previous backup set is archived.
