Project

Objective: To address understanding-based management of an exploited species taking into account the environment.

Means: On the day and time of the scheduled final exam (Thurs 13 Dec 07 0800-1100) presentations will be given and reports turned in.

Comments:

1 - Meet with Dave at least once, by 13 Nov 07, to discuss and agree on topic.

2 - Consider a species, models, the environment, fishing, policy, and management.

3 - This is a heuristic exercise. That is, I don't feel it is possible within the scope of this course and project to fully achieve the above objective. Rather, my intent is that you will discover what is necessary for, and perhaps what might preclude, the objective from being achieved. In the process, you will hopefully gain, and convey to the class and I, a better understanding of the species and its environment, fishery, and management, and issues pertaining thereto.

Presentations:

1 - 10 min with an equal amount of time afterwards for discussion. A computer projector will be available.

2 - Proposed outline:

a - background, including biology, environment, fishery

b - model description and results

c - discussion of implications for understanding, management, and policy.

Reports:

1 - 10-15 pages, including sections above, with references, tables, and figures; longer is fine, if necessary.

2 - The report should not be the powerpoint of your presentation but, rather, a written document. Please use care in use of English usage, spelling, units, axis labels, and so on. Use the FOG style (see For Authors on the FOG website) or simply look at a recent FOG article. It should contain the following sections: Title, Authors, Abstract, Introduction (~ a above), Model (~ b above), Discussion (~ c above), References, Tables, and Figures.

3 - I prefer your final report to be e-mailed to me as an attachment (Word or pdf). A hardcopy can be given to me as well.
