SIO 277

Deep-Sea Biology - Fall 2007

Instructor: Lisa Levin

Tuesday/Thursday 9:30-10:50 , Room 3230 Hubbs Hall, 4 units

The course will explore many facets of the ocean's largest ecosystem, the deep sea. It will consist of 20 lectures of approximately 70 min with a question/discussion session following each. Students are expected to read assigned papers before each lecture, attend class and participate in the discussions. Readings will be available on electronic reserves, and books will be in the library. Grading will be based on (1) one mid term assignment - TBA (25%), a research proposal (40%), an oral presentation (25%), and participation in discussion (10%). Each student is required to select a specific topic within the realm of deep-sea biology, read about the subject, identify an unanswered problem or controversial issue, and generate an hypothesis-based research proposal based on their acquired knowledge. Students will turn in a written report and give an oral presentation of this material to the class in a deep-sea biology symposium during the final exam period (Dec. 12). All students are required to participate in a one - (long) day field trip on Oct. 27nd aboard the R/V New Horizon to the San Diego Trough. Letter grades will be given by request only. Otherwise grading will be Satisfactory - Unsatisfactory.

Final Exam: Deep-Sea Symposium, Dec. 12, 2007 (11-2 PM)
