Submit Your Abstract


Purpose

The primary goal of IMSPO is to bring together students in physical oceanography and related fields of environmental fluid dynamics, atmospheric physics, biophysical interactions and ocean-atmosphere interactions to engage in scientific discussion and forge future relationships in a friendly and supportive environment.

Date and Location

IMSPO 2008 will be held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), University of California, San Diego on 22-24 October 2008. SIO is located in La Jolla, California, USA.

Who May Apply

We invite graduate students in physical oceanography and related fields to submit abstracts for 20 minute talks. Applicants from any country are invited to attend. Masters and doctoral students are welcome.

Registration

Registration for IMSPO 2008 is completed by submitting an abstract via anonymous FTP. Abstracts will be due 1 September 2008. A registration fee of $30 will be collected at the conference. Agenda

We plan to schedule student talks throughout the day for three days. Each speaker will be given a 20 minute block and we will enforce a 15 minute limit on talks to provide ample time for questions and discusssion. Distinguished plenary speakers will speak each day. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided. We will organize evening social events for attendees.

Getting Here

By Land:

US Interstate 5 provides easy access to SIO from the north and south (including Baja California, Mexico). US Interstate 8 intersects Interstate 5 just south of La Jolla.

By Air:

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is most convenient to SIO. Los Angeles International (LAX) has many more international arrivals and departures. Flying into the Tijauna International Airport in Mexico is also a possibility. We are currently unable to provide travel funds.

Accommodations

There are many hotels near SIO. We hope to offer some students accommodations with SIO students, but availability may be limited.

History

The 1st IMSPO was held at CICESE (Centro de Investigacion Cientifica y de Educacion Superior de Ensenada) in Ensenada, Mexico June 27-29, 2007 (http://oceanografia.cicese.mx/personal/cesar/PaginaIMSPO/). Masters and Ph.D students from 7 schools in Mexico and the US attended as well as faculty from CICESE and SIO. IMSPO developed from the CICESE-SIO Mexican-American Physical Oceanography Summer Student Seminar Series of 2005.

Organization

IMSPO 2008 is being organized by students in physical oceanography at SIO with faculty and institutional support. Financial support is being provided by the Oceans and Atmospheres Section of SIO. The IMSPO Organizing Committee consists of:
