                  PSMSL Public Access Directory
                  -----------------------------

This directory contains a number of files provided by the Permanent
Service for Mean Sea Level. It was introduced in September 1992
and at present has 'experimental' status.

To access the files, connect by Anonymous FTP to a Silicon Graphics
workstation at Bidston called:

        bisag.nbi.ac.uk   or   Internet Number 192.171.134.7

>From some countries, the connection by name will not be possible
yet and the IP number must be used.

In response to 'Name', enter 'anonymous' or 'ftp'

In response to 'Password', enter your own home userid@address

Then type 'cd pub' and 'cd psmsl' to connect with this directory 
and transfer files to your home machine with 'get'. If there are 
any problems, or if you have any comments on any of the files or 
on the data within them, please contact us either by:

psmsl.pol (Omnet) or 

psmsl@ua.nbi.ac.uk 

or one of the telephone, fax or telex numbers below.

If you are a new user of the PSMSL dataset, please mail us anyway
with your name, address and electronic mail address. This will 
enable us to keep our mailing lists up to date.

The files you will find in this directory are as follows:

DOCUMENTATION
=============

README        - this file.

PSMSL.README  - a short description of the PSMSL and its dataset.
                More information on the PSMSL can be obtained from
                the report 'Data Holdings of the PSMSL' available
                from the address below.
 
                The file also contains a brief description of the
                linkage of the PSMSL to GLOSS and WOCE Sea Level
                Centres for the provision of hourly height data.

catalog.dat   - an up-to-date catalogue printout of the data
                holdings of the PSMSL in the same format as the
                'Data Holdings of the PSMSL' publication.

indexa.dat    - list of authorities which contribute data to the 
                PSMSL, their addresses and the station codes of the
                relevant stations. Station codes followed by 'R' are
                in the PSMSL RLR dataset. 

indexb.dat    - list of PSMSL country codes and names, first in code
                order then in alphabetical order. Then a list of
                PSMSL station codes and names, first in code order
                then in alphabetical order. Station codes followed
                by 'R' are in the PSMSL RLR dataset.

IOSLIB.dat    - a printout of a keyword search on "sea level"
                for the past 3 years from the computerised
                catalogue of the libraries of the Proudman
                Oceanographic Laboratory and Institute of 
                Oceanographic Sciences Deacon Laboratory (IOSLIB).
                There are about 300 references for each year.
                No further keyword searching is possible via
                FTP - this file should be transferred to the user's
                own computer and keywords searched for by means 
                of a local editor.

PSMSL.GLOSS.pubs
              - a list of the main publications relevant to the
                PSMSL and to the development of GLOSS.


SMALL RLR ANNUAL MEAN DATASET
=============================

rlrannrd.hel  - description of the dataset of PSMSL RLR annual means.

rlrann.dat    - a small dataset of PSMSL RLR annual mean values - 
                see rlrannrd.hel for information.

rlrannrd.f    - a FORTRAN program to read rlrann.dat.


PSMSL MONTHLY AND ANNUAL MEAN DATASET
=====================================

psmslrd.hel   - description of the PSMSL monthly and annual
                mean dataset containing both Metric and RLR data.

psmsl.dat     - dataset of PSMSL monthly means - see 
                psmslrd.hel for information.

psmslrd.f     - a FORTRAN program to read psmsl.dat.

WOCE SEA LEVEL CENTRE INFORMATION
=================================

Information on hourly heights of sea level (or similar) is contained
within the directory /pub/bodc/wocesl. These files have been 
supplied by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) which is 
one of the two designated WOCE Sea Level Centres (WSLC's). 


GLOSS HANDBOOK AND GLOSS STATION MAPS
=====================================

glosshb.hel   - information on how to acquire the GLOSS Handbook over
                Internet.

glosshbv1     - a directory containing the 11 files required for the
                GLOSS Handbook Version 1.0 (1st June 1991) package.

glossmaps.hel - information on the contents of the glossmaps directory.

glossmaps     - a directory containing compressed Encapsulated
                PostScript files of maps of many of the GLOSS stations.
